Saké Mail Requirements
Saké Mail requires the same prerequisite
components as the Saké framework. Saké Mail also must have
access to a mail server that supports either POP3 or IMAP access,
and a mail transport agent that supports SMTP access. Any standards-compliant
server will work fine, and we have not yet found a server with
actual incompatibility problems. Different servers and server
plug-ins offer different types of features to different markets
though, and some servers may work better with Saké Mail than others.
We very strongly recommend using an IMAP
server, preferably one with full IMAP folder support, such as
Cyrus (for Unix servers)
or iMail
(for Windows servers). Using IMAP offloads the responsibility
of managing mail folders to the mail server, rather than depending
on Saké Mail to do it. Saké Mail focuses its attention on quickly
and efficiently providing a user interface to web users, and it
not as well-suited to folder management as a well-written IMAP
server. We recommend using POP3 or "POP3 with local folders"
modes only for special cases where setting up an IMAP server is
not possible.
If you are a mail server vendor
and you would like us to list your product on this page, please
contact
us with information on how we can connect to your server.
Please provide the name of your server, which protocols (POP3,
IMAP and/or SMTP) that you would like us to test, the OS that
the server is running under, the hardware that the server is supported
by, a test account user name and password that we can use to log
in to your server, and an email address corresponding to the test
account so that we can send test messages. We will be more than
happy to list your server once we verify compatibility.
If you are not a mail server
vendor, but you have a particular mail server installed at your
site that is not on our list of tested configurations, please
let us know. If you provide us with the information mentioned
above, we will be happy to verify compatibility for you, or you
can use our demo distribution to try it for yourself.
The following system configurations
have been verified compatible with Saké Mail:

iMail is a bit strange at
first, but it is very easily installed and configured, and
it seems to be very stable and robust. The single most impressive
feature of iMail is the flawless and extremely fast IMAP support.
We very strongly recommend using iMail with IMAP access for
Saké Mail if you are going to be using an NT server. |

Cyrus has some very strange
IMAP folder management rules. It will only allow the creation
of folders named "INBOX.something",
not simply "something".
To accommodate this peculiar perversion, Saké Mail supports
folder prefixes. Simply set your folder prefix to "INBOX."

This module is distributed
with RedHat Linux via an RPM as "imapd",
and is apparently a stripped-down version of the UW IMAP server.
(If this information is not correct, please let us know, we
are still trying to establish the genealogy of this server.)

This server doesn't have
any specific problems, and in fact functions perfectly. We
have done extensive testing with Exchange and have never had
a single malfunction. We specifically recommend against this
server, however, because it is extremely slow at message retrieval,
even with the normally extremely efficient IMAP protocol. |
